Multiplication, Division and Remainders: A Primary 3 Guide

Primary 3 covers the multiplication tables of 6, 7, 8 and 9, multiplying and dividing within the tables, division with remainder, written algorithms up to three digits by one digit, and mental calculation within the tables.

What multiplication and division actually asks of a Primary 3 student

Two hard things arrive together. The remaining tables — 6, 7, 8 and 9 — are the ones without easy patterns, and division with remainder is the first time an answer has two parts.

Remainders are conceptually new. Until now every division has come out exactly, and a child must now accept that “4 remainder 3” is a complete answer rather than an unfinished one.

The written algorithms also lengthen: three digits by one digit, with regrouping at each step.

What the syllabus covers

Under the MOE primary mathematics syllabus, multiplication and division at Primary 3 covers:

  • multiplication tables of 6, 7, 8 and 9
  • multiplying and dividing within the multiplication tables
  • division with remainder
  • multiplication and division algorithms (up to 3 digits by 1 digit)
  • mental calculation involving multiplication and division within the tables

Where the marks actually go

The 7 and 8 tables are the weakest across almost every class, and 7 × 8 is the single most-missed fact in primary mathematics.

Remainders larger than the divisor — answering “5 remainder 7” when dividing by 6 — show the division was stopped too early.

In word problems the remainder is reported when the context requires rounding up. If nine children need cars holding four, the answer is three cars, not two remainder one.

How to practise this properly

Attack 6, 7, 8 and 9 through what is already known: 6 × 7 is 6 × 6 plus 6, and 9 × anything is ten times it minus one lot. Give the child a route when recall fails.

After every division with remainder, check that the remainder is smaller than the divisor. It is a one-second check that catches the commonest error.

Practise remainder word problems where the context decides what to do with the remainder. That decision, not the division, is what the question is really testing.

What this leads to

Primary 4 brings the four operations together and Primary 5 introduces order of operations. Both assume tables are automatic, because a child still computing 7 × 8 has no capacity left for the structure of the problem.

This is the case for continuity. When the same curriculum carries a child from Primary 1 to Primary 6, nobody has to reconstruct where an earlier gap was left, and no year is taught as though the previous one did not happen. It also means a child moving up does not have to adjust to a different way of explaining the same ideas.

What does “division with remainder” mean?

A division that does not come out exactly, so the answer has a quotient and a remainder. The remainder must always be smaller than the number you divided by.

In word problems, should the remainder be ignored?

It depends entirely on the context. Sometimes it is discarded, sometimes it forces rounding up, and sometimes it is the answer. Reading the situation is the skill being tested.

How do I help with the 7 and 8 tables?

Build them from neighbours the child already knows, and practise the handful of genuinely hard facts more often than the easy ones rather than drilling the whole table evenly.
