AI tools are generally sound on arithmetic and often unreliable on Singapore-specific method and syllabus scope. The risk is not wrong answers so much as right answers reached by methods a child has not been taught.
Where these tools are usually sound
Straight computation is generally reliable. So is explaining a standard concept in ordinary language, which can genuinely help a child who did not follow the classroom explanation.
They are also patient and available at eleven at night, which is not nothing when a parent does not know the method and the homework is due tomorrow.
Where they drift
Singapore primary methods are specific. The model method, the way heuristics are taught, and the sequence in which topics are introduced are not universal, and a general-purpose tool will often answer using algebra a Primary 4 child has never met.
Syllabus scope is a second problem. A tool may happily teach a technique that is not in the primary syllabus at all, which produces a child using a method their marker does not expect and their teacher has not covered.
Confidence is the third. These systems state incorrect things in exactly the same tone as correct ones, and a child has no way to tell them apart.
How a parent can check
Compare the method with the one in your child’s workbook. If it looks unfamiliar, it probably is, and using it will confuse rather than help.
Ask the tool to solve the same problem a second time in a fresh conversation. Inconsistent answers are a strong signal that it is not reliable on that question.
Check the arithmetic independently. It is the part most easily verified and the part where errors are least excusable.
Before accepting an AI explanation, check:
- Does the method match the one in the school workbook?
- Is this technique in the primary syllabus at all?
- Does the arithmetic hold up when checked independently?
- Does it give the same answer in a fresh conversation?
A reasonable position
Useful as a second explanation of a concept, risky as a source of method, and unreliable as an authority on what is in the syllabus.
Used that way it is a genuine help. Used as a substitute for knowing what the school is teaching, it creates work rather than saving it.
