Spotting a Maths Foundation Gap Early

Foundation gaps hide because children develop workarounds. The way to find one is to ask why rather than what, and to test the level below the one causing trouble.

Why gaps hide

Children are resourceful. A child who has not secured multiplication will count up; one who has not understood place value will pattern-match. Both produce right answers on easy questions.

The workaround fails when the numbers get larger or the questions get longer, which is why gaps often surface a year or two after they formed.

What to test

Test the level below the one causing trouble, not the level itself. A Primary 5 fraction problem that will not resolve is often a Primary 3 equivalence problem.

Ask for explanations rather than answers. “Why did you divide there?” reveals whether the method is understood or copied.

Signs of a workaround

Correct answers produced slowly, with visible effort on things that should be automatic.

Fingers, tally marks or counting up well past the age where recall should have taken over.

Fluency that collapses when numbers get bigger, which suggests a method that does not scale.

An inability to explain a step that was executed correctly.

Questions that reveal a hidden gap:

  • Why did you choose that operation?
  • Can you explain that step to me?
  • What would happen if the numbers were bigger?
  • Can you do it a different way?
  • How do you know that answer is right?

What to do about it

Repair at the level the gap formed, even if that feels like going backwards. It is faster than continuing to build on it.

Expect the repair to be quicker than you fear. A gap that has caused two years of trouble often takes a few weeks to close once it has been identified correctly.

What lessons at Odyssey are actually like

A student on how the lessons work in practice. The clip is from our secondary classes, but the way concepts are explained is the same at every level. More are on Odyssey Math TV.

Where Odyssey fits

Our first lesson is diagnostic for exactly this reason: we would rather spend an hour finding the real cause than a term working around it.

We teach maths only, in small classes at Hexacube, 160 Changi Road #01-02, about three minutes from Eunos MRT. See the primary and secondary programmes, our MOE-aligned curriculum, schedules and fees, or the tutors who teach. Free video solutions to past-year papers are on Odyssey Math TV.

This is why we teach the primary years as one arc rather than six separate ones. Our MOE-aligned curriculum runs from Primary 1 to Primary 6, so when something goes wrong we can trace it to the year it actually formed and repair it there, instead of drilling the level where it happens to be showing up. That distinction usually decides whether extra work produces improvement or simply produces more work.

The first lesson is a free trial, and it is a diagnosis rather than a sales pitch: we would rather tell you what is actually wrong than sign you up. If the answer is that your child does not need tuition yet, we will say so. Book a free trial class or WhatsApp +65 8512 6882.

What we describe here comes from teaching this syllabus in our own classes since 2012. It is not a forecast for any individual child: progress is produced jointly, by a student willing to do the work with support at home. We do not promise grades. Topics follow the MOE primary mathematics syllabus — check the current syllabus on the MOE website for the definitive version, and see our curriculum page for how we teach it.

Frequently asked questions

How far back should I look for a gap?

Usually one or two levels below where the trouble is showing. Fraction difficulty at Primary 5 frequently traces to Primary 3.

My child gets right answers but slowly. Is that a gap?

Often, yes. Slowness on things that should be automatic usually means a strategy is being rebuilt each time rather than recalled.

Is going back a step demoralising for a child?

Less than continuing to fail at the current level. Most children are relieved once something finally makes sense.

How long does repairing a gap take?

Frequently a few weeks once correctly identified. The identification is the slow part, not the repair.
