A single mark says little. What matters is the pattern across time, which topics the lost marks belonged to, and whether effort and result are moving together.
What a mark does not tell you
A percentage tells you how much was lost and nothing about why. Two children on the same mark can have entirely different problems — one misreading questions, the other missing a topic.
Paper difficulty also varies. A drop of ten marks between two tests may reflect the papers rather than the child.
Signals worth taking seriously
Effort rising while results stay flat. That combination almost always means a foundational gap rather than insufficient work.
The same topic recurring in the lost marks across several assessments.
A widening spread between classwork and test performance, which usually points at timing or exam technique rather than knowledge.
Signals that are usually noise
One low result with no pattern.
Small movements within the same band. These are within the range that question selection alone can produce.
Comparisons with classmates, which tell you about the cohort rather than about your child.
Turning a report into a plan
Ask the teacher which topics the lost marks came from. That single question converts a grade into something actionable.
Then ask whether the errors were content, method or presentation. The remedies are different, and knowing which you are dealing with saves months.
Useful questions to ask at a parent-teacher meeting:
- Which topics did the lost marks belong to?
- Were the errors content, method, or presentation?
- Is this consistent with classwork?
- What would you work on first?
- What should we do at home, and what should we not do?

Mathematics at primary level does not reset each year, so neither does our teaching. The same MOE-aligned curriculum runs from Primary 1 to Primary 6, which means we can tell the difference between a child who has not met an idea and one who met it and never secured it. Those two situations look identical on a worksheet and need completely different responses.
