Building a PSLE Maths Revision Timetable by Term

PSLE revision works better spread across the year by topic than concentrated into full papers at the end. The shape of the year matters as much as the hours put in.

The common mistake

Many families start full past papers early and repeat them weekly. That diagnoses the same gaps over and over without closing them, and it is demoralising.

Papers are a measuring instrument. Measuring more often does not make a student better; it just produces more data about the same weaknesses.

A sensible shape for the year

Early in the year, work by topic. The syllabus is still being completed, and the useful activity is securing each topic as it finishes rather than revisiting everything.

By mid-year, shift towards mixed topic sets, because the PSLE does not label which topic a question belongs to and recognition needs practising.

In the final months, move to full papers under timed conditions, with careful review of each one. By then the papers are testing assembly rather than discovering gaps.

A workable term-by-term shape:

  • Term 1 — topic by topic as taught, securing each before moving on
  • Term 2 — mixed topic sets, plus repair of the running weakness list
  • Term 3 — timed papers with thorough review, weakness list still driving the time
  • Throughout — spaced re-checks of topics previously repaired

Keeping the weaknesses in view

Maintain the running list of topics behind lost marks throughout. Revision time should be allocated to that list rather than divided evenly.

Revisit closed gaps after a few weeks. A topic fixed in March is not necessarily still fixed in July, and spaced checking is what makes the repair hold.

Protecting the child

A Primary 6 year is long. Sustainable weekly effort beats intensive bursts followed by resistance, and the students who cope most comfortably are usually the ones whose families kept some normality in the week.

Build in weeks with less. Nobody performs well in October having worked flat out since January.

Almost every primary topic is scaffolding for a later one, and the scaffolding is invisible until it gives way. Frequently asked questions

When should full past papers start?

Generally not until the syllabus is largely complete and the main gaps are closed — often the second half of the year. Earlier than that they mostly measure what has not been taught yet.

How many hours a week is reasonable?

Consistency matters more than volume. Regular focused work that a child can sustain to October beats an intensive schedule abandoned in June.

Should revision cover every topic equally?

No. Time should follow the weakness list. Revising secure topics feels productive and changes very little.

What about the school holidays?

Useful for repair work on specific topics, but a complete break for part of it is not a luxury — it is what makes the rest of the year sustainable.
