Why Worked Solutions Still Matter More Than Final Answers

Singapore mathematics papers award substantial marks for method, so a student who reaches the right answer by unclear working still loses marks, and one who makes an arithmetic slip with sound method still earns most of them. Odyssey Math Tuition’s question-bank answers are recorded and worked through rather than printed as final answers.

What a mark scheme actually rewards

A long question is rarely worth its marks for the answer alone. Marks are distributed across the reasoning: setting up the correct equation, applying the right method, carrying it through, and stating the conclusion in the form asked for.

This has a consequence students find counter-intuitive. A wrong final answer with correct method can score well. A right answer that appears without justification often cannot.

Why answer-checking teaches so little

Comparing a final answer tells a student one bit of information: right or wrong. It does not say which step failed, whether the method was appropriate, or whether they were lucky.

A student who checks answers and finds two-thirds correct has learned almost nothing actionable. A student who compares their working line by line against a worked solution knows exactly where the divergence began.

How to use a worked solution properly

  1. Attempt the question fully first, including the parts you are unsure of.
  2. Compare working line by line, not answer to answer.
  3. Find the first line that differs. That single line is the lesson.
  4. Ask why the solution did that. If you cannot answer, the gap is conceptual.
  5. Redo the question from blank paper before moving on.

Step three is where the value is. Everything after the first divergence is a consequence rather than a cause, and students waste time studying consequences.

Presentation is a learnable skill

  • State what you are finding before you find it
  • Keep one equation per line rather than compressing several steps
  • Show the substitution as well as the result
  • Give the final answer in the form requested, with units
  • Do not erase wrong working — cross it out, since it may still earn method marks

These habits are learned by watching them modelled repeatedly, which is why solutions worked through aloud teach more than printed answers.

The difference between reading a solution and using one

A worked solution can be consumed in two quite different ways, and only one of them teaches.

  • Reading it produces recognition. Everything looks reasonable, nothing is retained, and the next similar question is just as hard.
  • Using it means covering the solution, attempting a line, uncovering to check, then continuing. Slower, uncomfortable, and it works.

The second method is roughly three times slower per question and worth far more per hour. Students resist it because progress feels slower, which it is — measured in questions covered rather than in things learned.

This is also why the online courses pair every explanation with topical practice and a topical test. The explanation is not the product; it is the input.

Where this matters most

Long structured questions carry the most method marks, which means the topics with the longest questions reward presentation most: calculus in A-Math, the extended problems in O-Level E-Math, and almost everything in H2 Mathematics, where a single question can run to a full page.

A student on the online course

Myra describes what studying with the online course was actually like.

What we describe here comes from how our own online courses are built and from what we have seen in our own classes. It is not a forecast for any individual student: progress is produced jointly, by a student willing to put in the work with support at home. No tuition centre in Singapore may promise grades, and we do not. Course details and prices are as published at the time of writing — check the course pages for current information.

Frequently asked questions

Why do students lose marks despite getting the right answer?

Because much of the credit is for method. Unclear or absent working cannot earn those marks even when the final answer is correct.

Are the answers in the question bank worked through?

Yes. Question-bank answers are recorded and worked through rather than printed as final answers alone.

How should a student compare their work to a solution?

Line by line, looking for the first line that differs. Everything after that point is a consequence rather than the cause.

Should wrong working be erased?

No. Cross it out instead. Crossed-out working can still be credited; erased working cannot.

Does presentation really change grades?

On long structured questions it can change several marks per question, which across a paper is substantial.

Where can I see the course structure?

On the e-learning system page, with individual pages for each level.
