A-Math is a different subject, not a harder one

Students rarely describe A-Math as difficult. They describe it as strange — and that is the more accurate word. E-Math largely asks you to apply a method to something you can picture. A-Math asks you to work with abstractions: a function you cannot sketch from memory, a logarithm that undoes an exponent, an identity that has to be manipulated on faith until it resolves. The skill being tested shifts from computation to reasoning.

Where Sec 3 A-Math goes wrong

Sec 3 A-Math covers functions, logarithms, quadratic functions, coordinate geometry and trigonometry — and each builds directly on the last. That is why the subject punishes small gaps so severely. A student who is unsure how to manipulate surds will struggle with quadratics; one who never really understood functions will find every later chapter slightly out of focus. The trouble almost never starts where it shows up.

Method marks are most of the paper

A-Math markers reward the argument. A correct final answer with no supporting work scores poorly, and a wrong answer with sound method often scores well. This surprises students who did well at E-Math by being quick and accurate. How to work a paper

Attempt it cold and to time. When you get stuck, note precisely where the reasoning stopped rather than jumping to the solution — that location is the actual gap, and it is usually one chapter earlier than the question.
