Length, Mass and Volume: A Primary 2 Measurement Guide

Primary 2 measurement covers measuring length in metres, mass in kilograms and grams and volume of liquid in litres, using the abbreviations m, g, kg and ℓ, and comparing and ordering each.

What length, mass and volume actually asks of a Primary 2 student

Two new quantities arrive at once. Mass and volume are less intuitive than length because a child cannot see them directly — a small dense object can be heavier than a large light one, which is genuinely surprising at seven.

The syllabus asks for appropriate units as well as correct numbers, so part of the topic is judgement: would you measure a door in metres or centimetres?

What the syllabus covers

Under the MOE primary mathematics syllabus, length, mass and volume at Primary 2 covers:

  • measuring length in metres, mass in kilograms and grams, and volume of liquid in litres
  • using appropriate units of measurement and their abbreviations m, g, kg and ℓ
  • comparing and ordering lengths, masses and volumes

Where the marks actually go

The unit is omitted or the wrong one is chosen. A number without a unit is not an answer to a measurement question.

Children assume bigger means heavier, and answer comparison questions from the picture rather than from the stated masses.

Reading a scale between marked divisions is guessed rather than worked out, particularly on measuring jugs where the divisions are not single units.

How to practise this properly

Weigh and measure real things and write each result with its unit. The physical experience of a kilogram is what makes estimation possible later.

Ask which unit is sensible before measuring anything. Choosing between grams and kilograms is itself examinable and takes seconds to practise.

Read scales together, counting the divisions aloud so your child sees that the gap between marks is not always one.

What this leads to

Primary 3 adds kilometres and millilitres, compound units and conversion between them — a step that is far easier for a child who already has a physical sense of what each unit means.

Because each year assumes the last, we teach the primary levels as one continuous sequence. Our MOE-aligned curriculum covers Primary 1 through Primary 6, so repair happens at the source rather than at the surface. In practice that often means spending a lesson on something from two years ago in order to fix what is failing today.
