Numbers Up to 1000: A Primary 2 Guide for Parents

Primary 2 extends numbers to 1000: counting in tens and hundreds, place value in hundreds, tens and ones, reading and writing numbers, comparing and ordering, number patterns, and odd and even numbers.

What numbers up to 1000 actually asks of a Primary 2 student

The jump from 100 to 1000 sounds like more of the same and is not. A third column appears, and with it the possibility of a zero sitting in the middle of a number. Reading 405 as “forty-five” is one of the most persistent errors at this level.

Odd and even numbers also arrive here, quietly. They look trivial and they are the first time a child is asked to classify numbers by a property rather than by size — which is a genuinely different kind of thinking.

What the syllabus covers

Under the MOE primary mathematics syllabus, numbers up to 1000 at Primary 2 covers:

  • counting in tens/hundreds
  • number notation, representations and place values (hundreds, tens, ones)
  • reading and writing numbers in numerals and in words
  • comparing and ordering numbers
  • patterns in number sequences
  • odd and even numbers

Where the marks actually go

Zero as a placeholder is the big one. A child who reads 308 correctly but writes “three hundred and eight” as 3008 has not understood what the zero is doing.

Counting in hundreds across a boundary — 890, 990, 1090 — catches children who are pattern-matching on the last digits rather than tracking the whole number.

Writing numbers in words continues to cost marks. At three digits the word “and” matters, and its placement is marked.

How to practise this properly

Say numbers aloud and have your child write them in numerals, deliberately including numbers with a zero in the tens place. The error only shows up when you test for it.

Count in tens and hundreds starting from awkward numbers rather than round ones — from 347, not from 300. Round-number practice hides the weakness.

For odd and even, ask about numbers larger than the child has met. The rule depends only on the last digit, and noticing that is the point of the topic.

What this leads to

Primary 3 goes to 10 000 and adds a thousands column, and the same zero-placeholder problem reappears one column further left if it was never fixed here.

Mathematics at primary level does not reset each year, so neither does our teaching. The same MOE-aligned curriculum runs from Primary 1 to Primary 6, which means we can tell the difference between a child who has not met an idea and one who met it and never secured it. Those two situations look identical on a worksheet and need completely different responses.

Why does my child write 3008 for three hundred and eight?

They are writing what they hear, one chunk at a time, rather than placing digits by column. Working with a place-value chart for a week usually resolves it.

Are odd and even numbers examined?

They are in the syllabus at Primary 2 and appear in questions, often as a condition inside a larger problem rather than as a question on their own.

How far should mental counting go at this level?

Comfortably in tens and hundreds within 1000, including across hundreds boundaries. That fluency is what makes Primary 3 addition feel routine.

Does my child need to write numbers in words?

Yes, the syllabus specifies reading and writing numbers in both numerals and words, and spelling is marked.
